Gartner predicts strong 2012 for smartphones

Gartner has revised its predictions for the coming year saying that growth in mobile phone production will now be slightly higher at 7.5% and while it has reduced the forecast for media tablet production – from 110 million to 107 million in 2012 – it is still expecting a 63% increase year-on-year in this segment.

Smartphone sales are booming

Worldwide sales of smartphones will top 420 million this year according to market watcher IMS Research. The company said that smartphones will account for nearly 28 percent of the total global handset market this year and it expects unit sales will surpass one billion devices by the end of 2016. Figures are in line with those from IDC, which say that the worldwide mobile phone market grew 65.4 percent in 2Q – the third consecutive quarter where total shipments exceeded 100 million units.

Android sales up 800 percent

The market share claimed by Android smartphone handsets in the UK has grown by 810% in the past year, according to figures from research firm GfK. Smartphones claimed 48.7% of all handset sales and 83.1% of contract sales in February 2011 with Android dominating the smartphone operating system with a 34.1% share.

The figures show that Android handsets are starting to take a hold with consumers and with business buyers as more apps become available and confidence in the platform grows. That’s going to add momentum and competition to the market in the second half of the year, when we can expect a lot of exciting new Android smartphone releases.

Computer 2000 parent company, Tech Data Corporation, has entered into an agreement to acquire the stock of Triade Holding, a privately-held portfolio of value added distributors of consumer electronics, mobility and information technology products in Benelux and Denmark. In a related transaction, Brightstar Europe, a joint venture between Brightstar Corporation and Tech Data, has announced an agreement to acquire Triade company, Mobile Communication Company (MCC), a mobility specialist in Benelux. The transactions are subject to EU regulatory approval and are expected to be completed during the third quarter of fiscal 2011.
