Canon takes imaging into the cloud

Canon has enhanced its imageRUNNER ADVANCE imaging platform to allow users to directly connect to cloud services for the first time. This enables businesses to scan-to and store paper documents on Microsoft SharePoint Online or Google Docs from their MFD without the need for a PC. Stored data can then be accessed simultaneously by multiple users regardless of location on a variety of platforms including a PC, mobile device or smartphone, or printed directly from the imageRUNNER ADVANCE device. Western Digital set to acquire Hitachi GST… but what does this mean for the industry?

The acquisition of Hitachi GST by Western Digital could be seen in two ways; as a positive move that will create new investment and opportunity; or as a further consolidation of the disk storage vendor community that will play into the hands of the biggest players. The disk storage market is an extremely competitive, global, volume business. According to market research firm iSuppli, WD has about 31% of the market, closely followed by Seagate with 29%, while Hitachi has around 18%. So, post acquisition, the WD-Hitachi alliance will have almost half of the market.

The Cloud is almost upon us

The brave new world of Cloud computing is almost upon us.  It has been estimated by AMI Research that SMB Cloud spending alone will reach $100 billion by 2014 and other estimates also predict massive growth; IDC estimates the market for public Cloud products and services will be $16 billion this year and will grow to $56 billion by 2014, while Gartner is even more positive and expects the Cloud market to be worth $150 billion by 2013. 

It is clear that, whatever the actual rate of growth, Cloud computing will become one of the main areas of IT spending in the next few years.

Cloud computing promises to change the landscape of the software business over the next decade.  One of the leaders in this area, as you’d expect, is Microsoft, especially around the development of software as a service (SaaS) models. Indeed, what Microsoft does in this market, could point the way for the entire industry.
