Tablets to take a sixth of the market

IDC expects tablet sales to make up more than a sixth of the PC market in 2011. The analyst says that 62.5 million units will be shipped this year while overall PC shipments will be up just 3 percent to 357 million, which would give tablets a 17.5 percent slice. Around 18 million tablets were shipped in 2010. In Q2 this year, IDC says that Apple took a 68.3 percent share of the market. In EMEA Europe, tablet shipments were almost 4.4 million units in 2Q11 – an increase of 394 percent compared with the same quarter last year and up 82 percent compared with 1Q11.

Apple beats expectations

Apple shipped over nine million iPads and more than 20 million iPhones in the third quarter of its financial year and beat market expectations by generating revenues of $28.57bn and net profit of $7.31bn. It was the company’s best-ever quarter. Between April and June sales of iPad tablets were up to 9.25m, an increase of 183 per cent on the same period last year, while iPhone sales were up 142 percent. While Apple continues to lead the way, these figures are a good sign for vendors that are now moving into the tablet market. DisplaySearch has projected global sales of tablets will rise from 26 million in 2010 to 72 million units this year and more than 100 million units in 2012. Canalys is more conservative with its estimate that 52 million tablets will ship in 2011 but also notes that this surge will see the overall PC market grow by 14 percent.

Massive market growth expected for tablets

Recent research from DisplaySearch predicted that 60 million tablet or slate devices will be sold worldwide this year and that in 2016, 260 million tablet devices will be shipped worldwide. That equates to annual growth of 34 percent. More conservatively, InStat has predicted that sales of tablet devices will hit 58 million units by 2014. Whichever research figures you believe, this is certainly going to be a big market and one that no IT, mobile or technology reseller or retailer can afford to ignore.
